Each March the Wiregrass Museum of Art hosts Youth Art Month, an event celebrated annually in schools, museums, and other organizations around the country. The month includes a juried exhibition of art by K-12 students from the Wiregrass region as well as WMA’s own Out of the (Art) Box, an installation competition for high school groups. Public, private, and home schools in the Wiregrass region are encouraged to participate.

ENTRY GUIDELINES

  • Enter only ONE (1) artwork per student. Please limit to FIVE (5) submissions per art project.
  • Only teachers may drop-off or pick-up artwork which must be delivered during drop-off dates/times.
  • Artwork should be well constructed, sturdy, and not contain food materials or glitter.
  • Students and teachers must complete the Honesty Statement on the entry form and attach to back of work with masking tape. Do not use clear tape, staples or glue.
  • Limit artwork to 2D (standard sizes) and 3D works (no larger than 12” x 12”). All mediums accepted.
  • Artwork that does not adhere to the guidelines will not be considered.
  • All Grade 11-12 submissions to YAM will also be considered for the Second Congressional Art Competition provided the submission meets the 26” x 26” size requirement as outlined in the Second Congressional entry guidelines.
  • By entering YAM, WMA reserves the right to reproduce images from selected art works for promotional purposes. Credit will be attributed.

SELECTION OF WORK

All works for display in the Youth Art Month Exhibition will be selected by two (2) art professionals not associated with WMA or area arts programs.

Elementary and Middle (K- 8) jurors will select pieces that offer the best representation of grade level and imagination.

High School (9 – 12) jurors will select works that offer the best representation of grade level, craftsmanship, innovation, and technical skill.

AWARDS

High School (9 – 12) students’ works are eligible for the following awards:

  • Wiregrass Museum of Art Award, hung at WMA
  • Youth Art Month Award, hung at a sponsor’s location
  • Houston County Award, hung in the County Commission Building
  • City of Dothan Award, hung in the Mayor’s Office
  • 2nd Congressional Art Competition Award, hung at Capitol
  • Elementary and Middle School Awards
  • Wiregrass Museum of Art Award, hung at WMA

High School awarded artwork will be displayed at the designated location for one (1) year, from March 2018 through March 2019. Works will be returned in April 2017. High School award winners will receive a $50.00 check. High School award winners receive recognition during a Dothan City Commission meeting held in early March 2018.

IMPORTANT DATES

THE 2ND CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION: ARTISTIC DISCOVERY CONTEST

The Congressional Art Competition, also known as the Artistic Discovery Contest, is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our Congressional district. This competition is open to all high school juniors and seniors (11-12) in the Second Congressional District. The winning piece from Alabama- District 2 will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol alongside artwork from other contest winners nationwide. All winning pieces from each Congressional district will also be considered for selection as the National Congressional Art Competition winner. Art works entered in the contest may be up to 26” x 26” (including the mat and frame), may be up to 4” in depth, and may not weigh more than 15 pounds.
The artwork may be: paintings – including oil, acrylics, and watercolor, drawings – including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers, collage, prints – including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints, mixed media, computer generated art, photography. All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution and meet the guidelines as stated on the website.
Students will submit to WMA through their teachers using the 2018 Youth Art Month Exhibition Entry Form. All 11th and 12th grade WMA Youth Art Month exhibiting artists who meet the criteria will automatically be entered into the 2nd Congressional Art Competition, as well. OUT OF THE (ART) BOX 2018

Out of the (Art) Box is an innovative variation on WMA’s popular public installation challenge. Teams of high school students (grades 9 – 12) will create original installations using moveable “boxes.” This year, students will be challenged to completely transform their material and think outside of the “(art) box.” The completed “boxes” will be created at the museum and then displayed in the museum galleries. The winning team will receive a donation to their school’s visual art program.

ENTRY GUIDELINES

  • Enter only one (1) Letter of Intent per school.
  • Each team must have no less than four (4) members and no more than six (6).
  • Completed installations will be on exhibit in WMA’s galleries for the duration of Youth Art Month; March 2018.

All teams Letters of Intent must include the following:

  • Name of school along with name and email of teacher mentor.
  • List of students on team. Include name, e-mail, mailing address, phone number and grade.
  • Written or typed recommendation from an art educator, teacher, or sponsor.
  • Reason why your team should be picked. 30 words or less. Be as creative as possible!
  • Mail or bring installations to WMA, 126 Museum Ave., Dothan, AL 36303. Written material can be emailed to education@wiregrassmuseum.org.
